CAL FIRE Policy 1500: The Plain-English Guide to Class A Uniform Compliance
Written by All Risk Uniforms — L2881-endorsed and owned by an active CAL FIRE firefighter. Updated for the current fiscal-year specifications.
1. What Policy 1500 Actually Is
CAL FIRE Policy 1500 is the department's standing policy on uniforms — the document every member is held to during inspection, graduation, ceremonial duty, and formal events. It is not a fashion guideline; it is the spec sheet your battalion chief is reading when they look you over.
The shorthand "Policy 1500 compliant" means a uniform meets every requirement under that policy: fabric, cut, buttons, brass, shoes, headwear, and tailoring. Get one wrong and you can be sent home from your own graduation. We've seen it happen.
2. Fabric Requirements
Trousers
100% wool worsted, mid-weight, in the regulation navy/black tone. Polyester blends are not approved; wool-blends below 95% wool are not approved. The fabric must hold a knife-edge crease through inspection.
Jacket
Mid-weight wool blend, double-breasted dress cut. Lining requirements vary by manufacturer but the outer shell must match the trouser tone closely.
3. Jacket Cut and Silhouette
Double-breasted, six-button front, peaked lapel. The peaked lapel (not notched) is the giveaway — civilian dress jackets are notched. Side vents on the rear, not center vent.
The silhouette must be tailored, not boxy. A slightly tapered waist and proper shoulder fit are part of the standard.
4. Buttons
Eureka, gold-tone, exact spacing. The Eureka button is the only approved manufacturer for Policy 1500. Six buttons on the front, plus four sleeve buttons (two per cuff). The button face carries the State of California "Eureka" device.
Generic gold buttons of any other manufacturer fail inspection. You can buy these as standalone replacement sets for your jacket if a button comes loose.
5. Brass and Insignia Placement
Three categories of brass appear on a Policy 1500 Class A:
- Collar devices — your assignment device, placed centered on each collar point per the regulation diagram.
- Chest pocket badge tab — your shield, with the proper tab cut to fit the pocket flap.
- Sleeve devices (chiefs and above) — rank and longevity bars, placed at regulation intervals from the cuff.
Cadets graduating from academy are typically issued without a permanent badge until they're sworn in — but the badge tab and collar devices are still required at graduation.
6. Dress Cap and Devices
Peaked dress cap in the matching tone, with the appropriate hat device for your assignment. The hat device is brass and matches the collar device family. The chin strap is patent leather, not vinyl.
7. Shoes and Dress Socks
Plain-toe black oxford, polished to mirror finish for inspection. Cap-toe oxfords, brogues, and any boot or loafer are not approved for Class A. Black dress socks (not athletic, not over-the-calf) under the trouser cuff.
8. Sizing and Tailoring
Class A is a tailored uniform — off-the-rack will not pass inspection on most builds. Three ways to get it right:
- In-store fitting at our Redding HQ or Ione satellite — pin-and-pickup, full alteration on premises.
- 100% online with measurement guide — we are the only CAL FIRE vendor that offers this with a re-tailor or refund guarantee.
- By phone — call (530) 215-1522 and we'll walk you through your measurements.
9. Common Compliance Failures (Why People Get Sent Home)
- Wrong button manufacturer (anything other than Eureka).
- Notched lapel instead of peaked.
- Wool blend trousers instead of 100% wool worsted.
- Brogue or cap-toe shoes instead of plain-toe oxfords.
- Hat device for the wrong assignment.
- Trouser break too long (puddling on the shoe) or too short (showing sock when standing).
- Jacket sleeve length wrong (should show ¼ inch of shirt cuff).
